Understand How Carpet Is Priced

Pacific Floor Co. is here to help you find the perfect carpet for your life and budget. Carpet pricing is based upon three main features: fiber, weight and construction. Higher ounce-weights and construction will greatly affect durability, and in turn, price. Carpets with better fibers, including new stain/soil-resistant fibers, will increase prices but include longer warranties. Natural fiber, think wools and sisals, and eco-friendly carpets will also be in a higher price bracket.

Understanding carpet fibers and styles: Are you ready?

Nylon carpets, which includes Anso, Wear-Dated, STAINMASTER, Luxerell and Tactesse, is still the leading fiber when it comes to performance. Nylon fibers have a built-in stain protectant, a huge benefit for any carpet. Nevertheless, polyester carpets have made great strides in performance and durability. Mohawk's Smart Strand and Shaw's Clear Touch are two examples of popular soft yet stain-resistant carpet floors.

offer many of the performance features previously seen in nylon alone. Fiber selection affects carpet end use performance. Manufacturers are a valuable resource in determining the fiber and construction most appropriate to the application.

Find stain resistant carpet at Pacific Floor Co. in Murrieta

Stain Resistant = Polyester Fiber

Polyester carpets are the budget-friendly carpet option with exceptional resistance to stains. New technologies enable polyester carpets to withstand life with kids and pets with ease. Dense polyester carpets that feature higher piles will typically be the longest lasting. Polyester fiber carpets are also a great choice for those looking for bright carpet colors.

Great For:

Polyesters perform better in those rooms with low to moderate traffic. Ideal rooms for polyester include bedrooms, offices and media rooms.

Wear reistant, high traffic carpet at Pacific Floor Co. in Murrieta

Wear Resistant = Nylon Fiber

While more expensive than other synthetic carpet fibers, nylon has a built-in resilience homeowners love. Nylon carpets are also extremely versatile in styles, including low, dense berbers and plush texture carpets. Many of the premium nylon carpets will also feature stain and resistance warranties. Textured nylon carpets are known to hold their shape well no matter your lifestyle.

Great For:

Nylon carpet is ideal for those high-traffic areas of the home. These include living rooms, hallways, stairways and playrooms.

Stain and wear resistant carpet great for all lifestyles

Stain + Wear Resistant = Triexta Fiber

Triexta is the “new” fiber that made big waves in the carpet industry. Triexta was originally created by DuPont, but is now available from Mohawk, Sorona and others. While a close relative of polyester, the look of Triexta is more similar to the matte appearance of nylon. Triexta is hydrophobic--does not absorb moisture, extremely stain resistant, and very soft.

Great For:

Triexta's durability and softness make it great for any room. Triexta can handle spills, traffic and pets.

Understanding carpet fiber and styles.

As you search for a new carpet, consider your home’s needs. Have pets? Consider avoiding loop carpets. Your pet’s nails can cause harm to the carpet and the carpet can even cause harm to your pets. Want eco-friendly? Look for natural fiber carpets like wool and sisol. Want a luxurious feel? Consider the soft plush feel of saxony carpet. Choosing the right carpet cushion.

Selecting the right carpet padding is instrumental in giving your carpet a supple feel and adding years of life to your new floors. While all pads will offer cushion and support, specific carpet cushions can dramatically increase the durability of your carpet, aid in moisture and odor absorption, and reduce noise transfers between rooms and floors. To find the cushion that will properly conform to your carpet, look for manufacturer recommendations or speak with an installation expert from Pacific Floor Co. in Temecula.

It's important to select the right cusion for your carpet.

When selecting cushion, check the carpet manufacturer’s requirements for thickness and density. Improper selection of carpet cushion can negatively affect carpet appearance, cause wrinkling and buckling, cause separation of the carpet seams and can cause a breakdown of the carpet structure itself. Improper cushion selection also may void any applicable carpet manufacturer’s warranties. A general rule of thumb for most residential carpet applications is to choose cushion no more than 7/16” thick and no less than 1/4 inch with a minimum of 6 pounds per cubic feet density. If the carpet is a Berber or a low profile carpet, choose a cushion no more than 3/8” thick with 8 pounds density.

Carpet cushion is made primarily from polyurethane foam, fiber or rubber and is available in a variety of styles and constructions to fit your needs. The type and thickness of cushion you need varies according to traffic levels and patterns. For example, bedrooms, dens, lounge areas and other rooms with light or moderate traffic can use thicker and softer cushion, while living rooms, family rooms, hallways, stairs and other heavy traffic areas require thinner, firmer cushion.

No other flooring warms and insulates a room like carpet.

The warm comfort that carpet provides is not just your imagination. Unlike other types of flooring, carpet is a natural insulator, providing additional warmth in cold seasons. Even with the sunny weather we have here in Southern California, many still shop for Murrieta carpet because they prefer it’s warmth for cozier spaces likes bedrooms and living rooms.

The use of carpet in a wall-to-wall application actually increases the R-value, or insulation level, of the carpet area, potentially saving homeowners like you utility costs while reducing energy use. The R-value (thermal resistance) measures how much a material resists the movement of heat through a ceiling, wall, or floor in a building. The higher the number, the more effective the insulation.

Recently, tests carried out at the Johns Manville Technical Center Thermal Labs, one of the most sophisticated laboratories of its kind in the world, confirm carpet and pad significantly increase R-value compared to other flooring materials. Results varied according to the carpet’s construction, with heavier products generally providing higher R-value. Carpets were tested with and without cushion, and the combination maximized the R-value. Carpet really is warmer.

Test results from the different carpet constructions were compared to three hard surface products – ceramic tile, laminate, and engineered hardwood – and the differences were dramatic:

Carpet vs. engineered hardwood: From 3 to 7 times the R-value.
Carpet vs. laminate: From 4 to 8 times the R-value.
Carpet vs. ceramic tile: From 8 to 17 times the R-value.

Carpet with cushion represents a clear advantage in insulation capability over hard surface flooring, complimenting tile, stone or hardwood flooring in Murrieta and cozying up bedrooms and living areas. Of course, potential energy cost savings by using carpet and cushion in lieu of hard surfaces will vary widely. The type of floor construction, local energy costs, climate, and carpet/cushion type all affect how significant these savings could be.

Obviously, savings would be greater in colder regions of the country.

Dr. Alan Hedge, professor of Department of Design and Environmental Analysis at Cornell University, also cites thermal comfort as another of carpet’s advantages. “Carpet feels warmer to the touch than other floor coverings because the air at room temperature is trapped by the carpet fibers which acts as an insulator, and carpet has a low thermal diffusivity compared to other floor materials that have higher thermal diffusivities and that conduct heat away from the body more rapidly, resulting in a lower skin temperature, cooler sensation, and greater thermal discomfort,” Hedge reports.
